About Dreaming Otaku

Hello. I’m Steven, and this is my first website, Dreaming Otaku.

I grew up in the great Pacific Northwest, in a small town. At the time, cable was not available to us, and this was before the internet, before VCR’s, and obviously before streaming television! I had to make do with whatever was available on “over-the-air” channels. I’m sure to most of you, this is unimaginable!!! But, at the time, internet, streaming, even VCR’s were unimaginable to me! Yes, I’m a child of the 70’s, but still young at heart in my late 40’s!

The only anime I had access to was StarBlazers (Space BattleShip Yamato) and Speed Racer (Mach GoGoGo). Those 2 shows were broadcast over local television networks. Starblazers was every weekday morning before school, and Speed Racer was on weekends. These 2 shows sparked my love of anime that continues to this day. I’m so thankful for streaming services now! I still purchase the anime I truly enjoy though.

Through my love of anime, sprung my love for Japanese music. While I enjoy many of the anime songs, I really like bands and artists like Band Maid, L’Arc~en~ciel, Kreva, Nana Kitade, M-flo, Tokyo GeGeGay, and Misaki Iwasa among many others.

My video game obsession started at 7-11’s, malls, bowling alleys, pizza shops, and even the small, but sadly short-lived, video arcade that sprung up in my small hometown. My father once brought home a semi-used PONG system, but beyond that I never had an Atari, Intellivision, ColecoVision or the Odyssey growing up. I never even owned my own home console until I bought my own Genesis when I was 19 years old I believe. So, I had to go out of my way to find and enjoy the games I loved! Now, I have many consoles and 100’s of games, but lack the sufficient time to play them as much as I’d like!

As my love of anime, music, and games grew, so did my desire to learn more about Japan, its people and its culture. As a result, I met and fell in love with a Japanese woman who I’ve been married to for over 10 years now. We have many differences, of course, but it makes life interesting in many ways. She does not watch anime, except full-length Japanese animated movies; think Studio Ghibli, Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda, etc. She does not like, nor care for video gaming. However, we do share a love of music, however, most of the Japanese performers I love, she does not like. We do love many of the same performers, American and Japanese, however. Even with our differences, we are best friends and enjoy each others’ company and love.

Japan itself is a wonderful place and I highly recommend visiting at least once in a lifetime. I’ve been 4 times and will be visiting many times in the future. I do hope to share some of my future experiences in Japan here with all of you.

What This Site Is About

This site will be about video games of all kinds, music (mostly Japanese artists), and anime too. I’ll write reviews, and articles about these things. I hope to do some unboxing videos for you, as well as review some tech items too. I will occasionally write some blog posts about what’s going on with the site, my opinion on things, travel, and culture. Of course, there may always be some surprises along the way.

My Goal For This Site

I want Dreaming Otaku to be a place that is friendly and welcoming to all. If you visit my site, I hope you will find something you enjoy here and continue coming back for more. I have far reaching goals for Dreaming Otaku. Is my scope too big? Who knows, but I’ll see where it goes. So, please feel welcome and come back anytime.
